Easy Homemade Chocolate-Covered Strawberries

Chocolate-covered strawberries are a classic New Year’s and Valentine’s Day treat. But that doesn’t mean they are less than delicious any other day of the year. Did you know that these are super simple and easy to make?

Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or just craving a quick sweet treat, making chocolate-covered strawberries at home is surprisingly simple.

Chocolate-Covered Strawberries
  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Cook/Melt Time: 1 minute
  • Chill Time: 20 minutes
  • Total Time: ~26 minutes
  • Yield: 10 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) fresh strawberries
  • 7 oz (200 g) dark, semi-sweet, or milk chocolate (chopped)
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil or neutral vegetable oil (optional, to thin the chocolate)
  • 4 oz (100 g) white chocolate (optional, for drizzling)
  • 3 tbsp finely chopped nuts, toasted coconut, or sprinkles (optional garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Strawberries

  1. Thoroughly rinse the strawberries under cold water.
  2. Gently pat each strawberry completely dry with paper towels.
  3. Let them sit at room temperature for about an hour to ensure zero moisture remains on the fruit or leaves.

💡 Pro-Tip: Water is the enemy of melted chocolate! Make sure your strawberries are completely dry, or the chocolate may seize up and turn grainy.

Step 2: Melt the Chocolate

  1. Place your chopped chocolate into a microwave-safe bowl.
  2. Heat in 15–20 second bursts at 50% power, stirring thoroughly between each interval until smooth. (Alternatively, use a double boiler).
  3. If the chocolate feels too thick for dipping, stir in the vegetable or coconut oil until silky.

Step 3: Dip & Decorate

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment or wax paper.
  2. Hold a strawberry by its green stem (or insert a couple of toothpicks near the top for a firmer grip) and submerge it into the chocolate.
  3. Lift the strawberry out and swirl it slightly, letting the excess drip back into the bowl. Lightly scrape the bottom edge against the rim of the bowl.
  4. Place the strawberry onto your prepared baking sheet.
  5. Garnish immediately: While the coating is still wet, sprinkle over your chopped nuts or toppings so they stick.

Step 4: Drizzle & Set

  1. If using white chocolate for a decorative contrast, melt it using the same microwave method. Drizzle it over the set dark chocolate using a fork or a small piping bag.
  2. Transfer the tray to the refrigerator for 20 minutes until the chocolate shell is firm and crisp.

Storage & Serving Tips

  • Best Enjoyed Fresh: These treats taste best the day they are made.
  • Storing: Keep them in a cool spot for up to 24 hours. If you refrigerate them, place them in a single layer on parchment paper and cover loosely with a paper towel.
  • Serving: Take them out of the fridge 15–20 minutes before serving to avoid condensation forming on the shell.
